Botulinum toxin type A is an injectable neurotoxin, better known under brand names such as Botox Cosmetic®, Dysport®, and Xeomin®.
Neurotoxin treatments are mainly used to smooth dynamic wrinkles or those wrinkles that form as a result of facial movements like frowning, squinting, and smiling. Treatment works by blocking nerve impulses to the muscles, causing them to relax. As a result, expressions soften and the dynamic wrinkles are greatly reduced.
What it does:
- Prevents new lines from forming by relaxing the facial muscles and reducing excessive facial movements.
- Smooths appearance of deep lines and wrinkles.
What to do before the procedure:
- Stop smoking and drinking alcohol for at least 7 days before treatment as it increases the chances of bruising
- Common drugs that you may need to avoid include: Allergy medications, Anti-inflammatory, Aspirin, Warfarin, Sleeping aids, Ibuprofen, Vitamin E, Omega 3 oils
- Use a gentle cleanser and avoid stress on the day of your treatment
What to expect during the procedure:
- The skincare specialist will clean the treatment area with a cleanser
- Very small amounts of Botulinum Toxin are injected into the tiny muscles that create the folds in the skin using a tiny needle. This blocks the impulse from the nerve to the facial muscles, reducing the contractions that cause wrinkles
- Ice and light pressure is applied to the injection sites immediately after treatment to limit swelling
- No downtime is required and patients can resume their day immediately
What to expect after the treatment?
- Patients should avoid massaging or aggressively rubbing their face after the appointment
- Patients should avoid lying down for at least 4 hours after treatment in order to ensure the treatment settles properly in the facial muscles
- Patients should avoid strenuous activity for up to 24 hours following the treatment.
How many treatments are needed before results become visible?
- Results are visible after only one treatment
- The result of a Botox treatment typically lasts between 3-4 months depending on the area being treated and the amount of Botox administered
